August 16, 2024

students in classThe SA + P Architecture + Design Summer Academy program hosted two successful sessions in Santa Fe and Albuquerque this summer. The academy is designed to introduce high school juniors and seniors to the disciplines in which the SA+P offers degrees and certificates, preparing them for application to UNM’s undergraduate programs.

High school participants mastered the fundamentals and learned about the importance of placemaking and problem solving. Additionally, they gained invaluable hands-on and practical experience in creating their own designs. On the concluding Friday of each session, students made a presentation of their designs to faculty and team members who provided well-deserved praise and meaningful feedback.

Academy students benefited from exceptional instruction as part of their immersive and intensive 3-week education experience. The teams of professionals and instructors who generously shared their expertise to inspire the next generation of architects and planners, included:

Katherine Boles, Lecturer and Academy Coordinator
Stephanie Bunt, Assistant Professor of Architecture
Catherine Harris, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture
Evan Ripley, Lecturer
Clare Cardinal-Pett, Lecturer
Holly Hearn, Graduate Assistant
Hongyoung Kim, Graduate Assistant

According to Dean Robert Gonzalez, who revived the program as part of his priority initiatives since his appointment as dean in 2020, both sessions included a talented group of young participants. “The Architecture + Design Academy students gained valuable knowledge while demonstrating impressive skill and commitment,” stated Dean Gonzalez. “Through the academy we have the opportunity to encourage their talents and foster the next generation of architects in New Mexico and beyond.”
