Scholarships
The 2024 SA+P scholarship cycle is now open for applications. Please complete the following form by Monday, February 26, 2024 to be considered for all scholarships applicable to you. Late applications will not be accepted. Scholarship recipients will be notified before the end of the Spring 2024 semester. Dean Scholarships
Available For Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture
Selection Criteria: Selected by the committee. Open to students in all disciplines (Architecture, CRP, and Landscape Architecture).
Awards start at $2500
Selection Criteria: This scholarship is awarded annually and paid on a semester basis. Recipients are selected by the Dean, and the student must be enrolled in the Architecture Department. The student must have demonstrated academic achievement with a GPA of 3.0/4.0. The scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters, providing the recipient maintains a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Community-Engaged Service Award
Selection Criteria: This quasi-endowment is to present two annual community service awards, one to an undergraduate student, and one to a graduate student. The student must be an active volunteer engaged in community service related to their area of study within the university or within the state of New Mexico.

Forbes Lawton Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Awarded to a graduate student enrolled at the School of Architecture + Planning and displays financial need. This scholarship will be selected by a scholarship committee comprised of faculty from the School of Architecture + Planning. Preference may be given to students with disabilities, but the scholarship is open for everyone to apply for.

Frontier Golden Pride Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Selected by the committee. Open to all students in all disciplines (Architecture, CRP, and Landscape Architecture).

Marian B. and Kevin F. Ryan Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Selected by the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. Recipient must demonstrate academic achievement, financial need for scholarship assistance, and be enrolled as a full-time student in the SA+P. First preference shall be given to student in their third year of study, or juniors. First preference will be given to graduates of Silver City High School, second preference to graduates of any New Mexico high school. Successive awards to the same student are allowed provided the recipient is making satisfactory progress toward a degree and maintaining a grade point average of C or better.

Matthew Smilovits Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Awarded to returning, full-time graduate student.

Michel Pillet Endowed Memorial Endowment for International Studies
Selection Criteria: To provide summer or intersession travel support for second or third year undergraduate or first year graduate students in the Architecture Program. Preference is given for faculty-directed group travel.

Peggy Cavett Walden and Jerrold Leanky Walden Endowment
Selection Criteria: Eligible recipients must be students currently enrolled in one of the three professional programs at SA+P, with the expectation that the student will continue their study at UNM following a period of the grant. Recipients are expected to document the project and present their findings/conclusions following the completion of the project or study.

Roy Hertweck Memorial Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Awarded to a graduate student enrolled in the UNM School of Architecture + Planning with one or more semesters remaining in their studies. Preference may be given to eligible students who are a member of a state or federally recognized Indian tribe; and/or; have a demonstrated commitment to furthering the educational or career opportunities for Native American women and/or gender non-binary populations.

Schluntz Travel Endowment
Selection Criteria: To support participation of graduate architecture students in faculty led, group travel as approved by the Dean.

Sunia Design + Architecture Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Selected by the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning and their delegates. The recipient must be enrolled in one of three professional programs at SA+P with at least one semester remaining before graduation, and be a member of a federally or state recognized Native American tribe. Preference will be given to eligible students who are a member of an organization that works to advance or has demonstrated experience helping women in higher education and/or the workplace.

John B. Jackson Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Shall be used to provide scholarship aid to those students in all disciplines who were born within the State of New Mexico and have resided within the State of New Mexico for at least ten years.

Architecture Department Scholarships
AIA New Mexico and Professor Stephen Dent Sustainable Design Scholarship in Architecture
Selection Criteria: To be awarded to a Master of Architecture Student with a 3.0 GPA or higher, who has delayed need and is in their last year of the program. This student must also demonstrate a commitment to sustainable issues through a digital portfolio of their work.

AIA Santa Fe Chapter Endowed / Bradley P. Kidder Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Selection Criteria: The fund provides for annual scholarships to be used for students in the UNM SA+P Master of Architecture Program with two or more semesters remaining in the completion of the degree. The student must demonstrate exemplary work in advanced technology skills used in the practice of architecture. Scholarship preference is given to graduates of public or private schools in the following northern New Mexico counties: Colfax, Harding, Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Taos, or Union.

AIA Santa Fe Chapter Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: To provide for annual scholarships to be used for students in the UNM SA+P Masters of Architecture Program with two or more semesters remaining in the completion of the degree. The student must demonstrate exemplary work in the area of exploration of sustainable issues in architecture of New Mexico or the desert Southwest.

Anne Taylor Design Education Scholarship
Selection Criteria: The scholarship is for architecture students who are interested in teaching design education at the Pre-K-12 levels or who want to research, write about, or design a learning environment as a studio for children and test its effects on occupants. The student must be enrolled in cross-disciplinary design education at UNM.

Cherry See Scholarship in Architecture
Selection Criteria: For undergraduate (end of 2nd or 3rd year) and graduate students (who receive their undergraduate degree from UNM, or incoming graduate students who completed their first year of graduate study). Must be a full-time student (15 credit hours). Must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and graduate GPA of 3.0. Must maintain these minimum GPAs to be considered for succeeding years. Must have financial need. Scholarship may be awarded to the same student throughout their studies or to a different student each year.

Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Albuquerque Chapter Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in the Architecture Program Must be a full-time student with 2.75 GPA overall, 3.25 GPA in architecture courses. May be awarded to the same student throughout their studies. This scholarship rotates between engineering and architecture programs. Therefore, this scholarship is offered every odd ending year to an architecture student.

David Keller Endowed Memorial Travel Fellowship
Selection Criteria: To support foreign or domestic travel for research purposes. Recipient must be a returning graduate student enrolled in the Architecture program. Recipients will make a presentation to the donor during the semester following their travel experiences.

Donald Tucker Scholarship in Architecture for a Socially Responsible Undergraduate Student
Selection Criteria: The recipient should demonstrate social responsibility through experience with work- or volunteer-related activities for organizations that support undeserved or disadvantaged communities.

Gilberto Churchill Forbes Scholarship
Selection Criteria: For an Architecture major, undergraduate student in 3rd or 4th year with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Must demonstrate financial need. Must exhibit a passion and talent for architecture, as demonstrated in their scholarship application.

Jim and Jeanette Larson Architecture Student Support Fund
Selection Criteria: The student must be currently pursuing a degree in Architecture, and demonstrates financial need. Recipients shall be selected by the Dean or his/her delegates in accordance with the normal procedures and criteria used to select any and all award winners. The award is to be used to purchase supplies, books or other media needed to complete a degree in Architecture.

Lou Weller Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: For a student in either the undergraduate or graduate program in Architecture with proven financial need. First preference is to an enrolled member of a U.S. federally recognized American Indian tribe who has graduated from secondary school in New Mexico. The student must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

NM Southern Chapter AIA Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: The student must demonstrate academic achievement and must be enrolled as a third- or fourth-year undergraduate student in the Architecture Program. Scholarship preferences will be given to residents of the following southern New Mexico counties: Chaves, Curry, De Baca, Doña Ana, Eddy, Grant, Hidalgo, Lea, Lincoln, Luna, Otero, Quay, Roosevelt, or Sierra. The scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive years as long as the student continues to demonstrate academic achievement and remains in the Architecture Program. Each scholarship recipient shall make an annual presentation of his or her work at a regularly scheduled monthly NM Southern Chapter AIA meeting.

Selection Criteria: The selection of the student to receive this award shall be based on the Architecture faculty’s determination of the best project completed in the terminal studio that fully represents the integration of design and technology.

Robert G. Mallory Architecture Scholarship in Architecture
Selection Criteria: The scholarship is awarded annually to a Master of Architecture student who grasps the discipline and shows competence in the processes of transforming architectural design into built reality.

Schoeman Travel Endowment for Architecture
Selection Criteria: To support travel within the Architecture Program, including domestic and foreign travel by students as approved by the Director of the Architecture Program.

Westwork Architects Scholarship in Memory of Glade F. Sperry and Lawrence W. Licht
Selection Criteria: For a student in the graduate program in Architecture and maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. To be selected by the Dean or appointed delegates. Can be awarded to the same student in successive years.

Don Schlegel Design Excellence in Architecture Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: A graduate student entering the Master’s degree program in Architecture. The student must have completed their undergraduate degree in Architecture at UNM. The recipient must be a graduate of a New Mexico high school.

Selection Criteria: A graduate student entering the Master’s degree program in Architecture holding an undergraduate degree from UNM School of Architecture and Planning.

Selection Criteria: The recipient must be a graduate student in Architecture dealing with the study of housing.

James W. and Jeanette C. Larson Endowment Scholarship for Architecture
Selection Criteria: A graduate student who is entering the Master’s degree program in Architecture. The student must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution other than the University of New Mexico.

Lalitha K. Iyengar Endowment
Selection Criteria: The scholarship is to support international students in the Architecture Program at SA+P. The fund may be used to provide assistance in the form of scholarships, faculty-directed student travel, stipends for summer architecture internships, registration and associated travel costs for conferences.

Maureen McMahon Walter Endowed Memorial Scholarship for Women in Architecture
Selection Criteria: To support women graduate students in the Architecture Program. The recipient must demonstrate academic achievement, be enrolled as a new or returning full-time student at UNM SA+P. Scholarship preference will be given to new graduate students entering the program.

NCA Architects Endowed Scholarship
Selection Criteria: For a graduate student with an undergraduate degree in architecture who is entering the two-year master’s degree in architecture program.

CRP Department Scholarships
Charna E. Staten Scholarship EndowmentSelection Criteria: The student must be either a beginning student or must be enrolled in the CRP Program. Special consideration will be given to women who apply for this scholarship based on Ms. Staten’s commitment to the empowerment of women.

Cynefin Scholarship
Selection Criteria: To support students who are admitted into the BA in Environmental Planning and Design Program (BAEPD) and are New Mexico high school graduates. Students much show financial need. Award is for the cost differential between the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship and tuition. Additional funds up to $500 for emergency needs as determined by the dean. Recipients must write a letter to donor expressing how they will use their education to benefit the community they come from. Selection by a committee that includes the CRP Chair, a BAEPD associated faculty member, and both the undergraduate and graduate advisors.

Herb Denish Memorial Scholarship
Selection Critiera: The recipient must be a student of the UNM School of Architecture + Planning, with at least one semester remaining before graduation, and a graduate of a New Mexico High School. Preferences may be given to eligible students who are enrolled in the Community and Regional Planning program at SA+P and are enrolled in a Graduate Degree program.

Rankin Family Endowment Memorial Scholarship
Selection Criteria: The student must demonstrate academic achievement, including making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 in CRP courses. The student must be enrolled as a full-time, returning graduate student in the CRP Program, and express a passion for physical planning.

Tir Comin Graduate Fellowship
Selection Criteria: First preference is to an enrolled member of a U.S. federally recognized American Indian tribe who has graduated from secondary school in the Four Corners states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, or Utah or who is resident in one of these states at the time of admission to the CRP program. A student who attended high school in New Mexico may receive the Graduate Fellowship if there is no eligible Native American student from the Four Comers states. The Graduate Fellowship may be awarded for two consecutive years to the same student, provided the student is making satisfactory academic progress and has maintained a 3.75 GPA. The recipient is will be requested to write a letter to the donor expressing how the fellowship will benefit the community from which they come from.

LA Department Scholarships
Connie Hyde Memorial Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Recipients shall be selected by the Dean or his/her delegates in accordance with the normal procedures and criteria used to select any and all scholarship award winners. The recipient must be a woman who is starting a second career in design, and who is enrolled in the 3-year MLA program. Preferences are given to students who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), have a focus on issues of racial/environmental justice, and who want to do a study abroad class.

Selection Criteria: LA Student that demonstrates design excellence.

Mitchell Associates Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Awarded to a student in the Landscape Architecture program at SA+P. The recipient must be a student in good academic standing. Preference will be given to students with financial need.

Morrow Stratham Award
Selection Criteria: To be selected by the Landscape Architecture Department Chair on the basis of need or merit. For two (2) BAEDP students entering the MLA in the Landscape Architecture Department. A recipient must be a UNM/SA+P graduate and have a BAEPD major and enter the UNM/SA+P Master of Landscape Architecture Program. Preferences are given to exceptional scholars, talented designers, and students who intend to become a licensed Landscape Architect.

Pland Collaborative Excellence Award
Selection Criteria: The Pland Collaborative Excellence Award will be given to an MLA student who demonstrates professionalism and work that represents pragmatism, beauty, innovation and resilience.

Yellowstone Landscape Scholarship
Designing, building and maintaining beautiful and sustainable landscapes for clients and users is at the core of Yellowstone Landscape’s mission. The Yellowstone Landscape Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding MLA student who demonstrates curiosity, collaboration, and a holistic approach to landscape design from concept to construction and maintenance.
