Students Receive Honorable Mention in Skid Row 2021 Competition

January 11, 2022

Undergraduate architecture students received an Honorable Mention in the Skid Row 2021 International Design Competition hosted by the AIA Committee on Design. Jennifer Dominguez Hernandez, Aayushi Patel, Irfan Gillani, and Stephen Quintana were selected as one of five winning teams for their project ‘Overlap.’ The design focused on the physical and mental health of people experiencing homelessness with a variety of safe community spaces and sustainable building goals. The competition jury commented on how “the habitable module was thoughtful and efficient despite its small size, and addressed the basic needs for view, light and air, privacy, storage, and hygiene.”

The project was part of the ARCH 301 design studio with SA+P faculty Sajini Badrinarayan. Fellow student Cody Begay coordinated the competition entry. Students worked collaboratively on competition entries for Skid Row 2021. The competition solicited design ideas for a temporary homeless shelter and services facility in downtown Los Angeles.

Congratulations to all of the competition teams, students, and winners.
