Dr. Alyssa Kreikemeier is a postdoctoral fellow supported by the National Park Service to write a history of Bandelier National Monument’s administration and management from 1988 to 2022. Alyssa earned her PhD in American Studies from Boston University with fields in public history, cultural landscapes, environmental history, Native American and Indigenous Studies, and visual culture. Her dissertation, Aerial Empire: Contested Sovereignties and the American West, examines how efforts to manage the lower atmosphere turned air into a novel site of imperial expansion and Indigenous sovereignty over the twentieth century. Kreikemeier has taught environmental humanities, ethics, writing, and pedagogy. She holds an EdM from Harvard University and Bachelor’s Degrees in Hispanic Studies and History from Montana State University. Raised on a farm in Montana, Alyssa is dedicated to rural places and people and serves on the board of Epicenter, a socially engaged design organization in Green River, Utah.
