Prior to my appointment at UNM in 1998, I taught design studios at the University of Houston, and was a principal in the firm of Morris Gutierrez Architects in Houston – I maintain my professional license in the state of Texas. I received recognition for my teaching and academic research on school-based health care centers as well as for various projects completed while a principal in my firm in Houston.
My community and professional service while in Houston included serving on AIA and student design award juries, the board of directors of the Rice Design Alliance, the Texas Historical Commission State Board of Review for Historic Properties, and pro bono work for various non-profit organizations.
During my tenure at UNM, I served as the Associate Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning from 2001 to 2008, which also included one year (2006) as interim director of the architecture program. As a faculty member I teach various graduate and undergraduate design studios and other non-studio courses. In 2008 I applied for a sabbatical leave, which enabled me to resume research in school-based health care environments during the spring 2009 semester.
